Kansas City is a great place to live in general, and especially for book lovers. If you enjoy reading on a cold winter night, you will adore these local Kansas City bookstores. Here are a few of our favorites:
Rainy Day Books
Located in The Fairway Shops, Rainy Day Books has promoted literacy throughout Kansas City since 1975. It began from humble beginnings and is renowned for its knowledgeable staff and commitment to the community. Customers can also join the Loyal Customer Program which offers ten percent off most in-stock books.
Rainy Day also features an author event calendar that’s one of the best and busiest in the country. It welcomes everyone from debut authors to bestsellers, and many of the events are held off-site to accommodate the large crowds.
Willa Robinson became passionate about reading at a young age. In 1994, she began selling books on 18th and Vine as a street vendor, and today she owns a brick and mortar location. Found on E. 63rd Street, it specializes in rare African American books and first editions. The shop also carries the works of a wide variety of mainstream authors. Further, the staff enjoys chatting with visitors, and the selection will satisfy the most avid reader.
Established in 1997, Prospero’s is found inside a historic 1890 building that was originally a grocery store. It features hardwood floors, exposed brick, and a pressed tin ceiling, and quickly became home to a thriving literacy, music, and arts scene. The shop is also internationally recognized for hosting the largest continual poetry reading, which goes on for a whopping 120 hours! The knowledgeable staff gladly answers questions, and genres include biography, history, and historical romance.
